Abstract

With the 1940 imagery and past vegetation studies in southern Florida as a base, the vegetation of the Atlantic Coastal Ridge of Broward County is mapped in detail for the first time. The vegetation including Strand, Tropical Hammock, Low Hammock, Mangrove, Swamp, Scrub, Pine Flatwoods, Dry Prairie, Wet Prairie and Marsh is similar to past studies (Harshberger, 1914; Harper, 1927; Davis, 1943). Differences in vegetation nomenclature are illustrated and the vegetation types are defined and discussed with reference to characteristic species, ecology and soils. A checklist of the vascular flora is compiled with 645 species in 136 families. Sixty-three percent of the species are of tropical affinity, 7% are endemic and 8% are exotic.
