Abstract
Pipe organs are musical instruments which appear in an almost infinite variety of sizes, styles of construction, tonal characteristics and visual appearances. These differences are governed by geographic origin and period of time of construction. The purpose of this study was to gather data on organs of various periods of time, size and type of construction. The results of this investigation further point out the differences between the classic, or Baroque organ as favored in Germany and the organ in Austria. These differences are the result in no small measure of the different use the organ had in Protestant Germany and Roman Catholic Austria. The method of research consisted of a personal inspection by the writer of some thirty-six organs while on a trip through Germany and Austria in 1970. The results are described in this study.
