Abstract
This thesis examines the history, laws, and debates surrounding euthanasia in the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Netherlands, and how euthanasia affects those with neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, I will discuss both the motor and non-motor symptoms as well as the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Huntington’s disease. This thesis will review the effects neurodegenerative diseases have on a person’s life and the ethics surrounding euthanasia, where some individuals support patient autonomy and others worry about the slippery slope it may cause. Finally, I will deliberate the strengths and weaknesses of these arguments as well as examine current policies and ways to resolve their shortcomings.
