Abstract

Grab a sun hat and your binoculars. Retreat from air-conditioning and step outside. Listen to the heady mixture of calm and chaos in the great outdoors of your yard, urban or rural. Bend down and look closely at the thriving world beneath your feet. A dose of Andrew Furman’s meticulously crafted essays on life in Florida compels one to forego summer’s inertia and soak up the extraordinary landscape most of us take for granted every day. Both books offer a thought-provoking, “highly selective” synthesis of Florida life and geography as viewed through the prism of an intuitive writer. Reading the essays inspires this Floridian to refresh her observations regarding our place, our home. Despite Florida’s contradictions, it remains paradise.
