Abstract
Nonlinear forced motion of one-degree-of-freedom statically compressed systems with cubic nonlinearity is studied. An approximate analytical criterion is employed to establish the bounds of driving force frequencies corresponding to the domination of simple harmonic motion (SHM). These analytical bounds are compared with those obtained by numerical integration. The SHM region is found to become narrower with increase of the compressive forces and to disappear when compression exceeds the critical level.
