Abstract
In the case of small vibrations in the vicinity of the nonlinear static state the pattern is considerably affected by initial imperfections. A simple model for linear vibration in axially-compressed structures is extended to nonlinear vibration of an imperfect bar. The closed-form solution is obtained for the natural frequencies in presence of the initial imperfections. In the particular case of a perfect bar the present solution reduces to an exact expression in terms of elliptic functions for a bar, with a sinusoidal vibrational mode along the axes.
