Abstract

This paper presents a generalization of the Smith-Herrmann problem, namely that of flutter of a uniform cantilever on an elastic foundation with uniform stiffness, under a follower force-by considering attachment of the foundation to part of the column. The unexpected finding of Smith and Herrmann, that the elastic foundation has no influence, is re-established for total attachment, while for partial attachment the flutter load is found to increase up to an optimum attachment ratio which maximizes the flutter load. The derivation was carried out with the aid of computer manipulation algebra. © 1987 Academic Press Limited.
