Abstract

In a large number of recent studies the old version of the Rayleigh's method with a noninteger power has been revived. In some cases, however, the use of the noninteger-power Rayleigh method did not allow for the closed-form expression for the buckling load which prevented further minimization with the respect to the undetermined power. In the present paper, the noninteger-power method is contrasted with another version of the Rayleigh's noninteger-parameter method-namely that with undetermined multiplier, equivalent to the use of the two-term approximation of the Rayleigh-Ritz method. © 1988.
