Abstract
Some unexpected results are uncovered for the free vibrations of inhomogeneous rods with constant cross-section. Namely, it is shown that the node of the second mode may take any location along the rod. Moreover, the natural frequency turns out to be independent of the node's location. © 2000 The Royal Society.
