Abstract

Euler's problem, that of buckling of a uniform column under its own weight, is generalized to include columns of variable stiffness. It is posed as an inverse problem: namely, determine the variation of the stiffness along the axis of the column so that the column has the prescribed buckling mode, given as a simple polynomial function. © 2000 The Royal Society.
