Abstract
The method of successive approximations was used to obtain closed form solutions for vibrating inhomogeneous bars. Bars of specified material density, stiffness and axial loading were considered. The spatial variation of the inertial coefficient of the bars, in order to possess pre-selected mode shape and stiffness distribution, was obtained. Results showed that the inertial coefficient constituted of a positive valued function along the axis of the bar.
