Abstract

The counterintuitive behaviors associated with Smith-Herrmann's columns under follower force and on elastic foundation, as well as the Bernoulli-Euler pipe conveying fluid on a partial elastic foundation, are re-examined. It is shown that treating the pipe as a Timoshenko beam removes, albeit not always, the paradoxical patterns of stability loss.
