Abstract

We address several buckling problems for nonuniform columns obtaining exact solutions as well as approximate solutions based on Galerkin’s method. It is shown that faster convergence is obtained using the higher order self-adjoint form of the governing differential equation. A detailed derivation is given for the buckling of heavy nonuniform columns. For the case of a heavy stepped column, in which the classical Galerkin method fails, we present a modified method employing generalized functions which displays excellent convergence to the exact solution.
