Abstract

The Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi) is an endangered subspecies of puma (Puma concolor). There have been numerous conservation efforts done to protect the dwindling breeding population of P. c. coryi, which presently inhabits only 5% of its historic range in peninsular Florida, but few have been successful. Among the greatest threats to P. c. coryi is human-panther conflict, most notably automobile collisions. Through the analysis of panther-automobile collisions over a ten-year period, it has been made clear that there are certain areas of the southwestern Florida region that are hotspots for P. c. coryi fatalities. This research will help guide efforts to prevent road kill, such as the creation of wildlife corridors, and help P. c. coryi’s population to rebound.
