Abstract

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is of significant concern and continues to pose a challenge to many. It is well established that despite the standard treatment options currently utilized, many are still dying from opioid overdose each year. This research aimed to create a plan integrating neurofeedback training into the treatment for opioid use disorder and evaluate the merits of doing so. Neurofeedback is an operant conditioning-based approach that uses EEG or fMRI to measure brain wave activation and alter brain wave patterns. Research articles currently testing samples of individuals with opioid addiction and co-occurring conditions were reviewed and favored in support of neurofeedback training benefits. Neurofeedback has the potential to increase the efficacy of OUD treatments and promote sobriety.
