Abstract
This study deals with the effects of a hygrothermal environment on the buckling of a wide beam-column composed of a layer of metal and a layer of fiber reinforced composite material. The elastica theory is used to derive the nonlinear differential equation describing the buckling of a bilayered beam-column exposed to a hygrothermal environment. Parametric studies are conducted using the solutions of the nonlinear and linearized differential equations governing the buckling of a bilayered beam-column with simply supported end conditions. Numerical results indicate that inclusion of the hygrothermal effects leads to considerable reductions in the load carrying capacity of a simple beam-column.
