Abstract

Laboratory experiments to provide a better understanding of the dynamics of drifting life rafts were conducted in an outdoor, above ground wave tank which measures 48 feet 10 inches in length, 23 feet 7 inches in width and has a depth of 24 inches. Vessel models were subjected to fan generated wind and waves created by a hinged wave paddle and their leeway was recorded and analyzed. The models were found to move so that wind and wave forces remained balanced. The life raft drag coefficients found are of the same order of magnitude as those ascertained in the numerical modelling of the same experiments.
