Abstract

The French Revolution invokes images of rebellion, chaos and terror in the mind of the reader, but beneath all the turmoil, a new political order had been born. Democracy, liberty and equality were the new Revolutionary slogans embraced by the French populace. Both men and women strove to preserve the new political system, but it was the role of women which has been historically ignored. The Revolution witnessed one of the first feminist movements in women's history. This thesis will concentrate on the rise and fall of the first political organization available to women of the Revolution, The Society of Revolutionary Republican Women. The group's demise was to influence the course of women's history in France for nearly one hundred years. In this respect, they are owed due mention in the annals of history.
