Abstract

This thesis examines whether the short run imports elasticities for travel and passenger transportation services of USA with respect to the exchange rate are smaller than the long run. Three distinct types of demand for imports of USA for travel and passenger transportation services were specified and estimated for this purpose: 1) aggregate, 2) from European and Mediterranean area, and 3) from selected European countries. The empirical findings indicate that in the three cases, the short run imports elasticities are smaller than the long run. These findings support the position that the "J curve effects" in USA balance of payments are introduced to some extent by the travel account. The thesis also contains a brief review of the theory of utility trees and its implications for econometric estimation of systems of demand equations.
