Abstract

Attempts to prepare an yttrium complex of cyclam by mixing of equimolar amounts of yttrium salts and cyclam in methanol result in the formation of dihydrocyclam salts. The salts were characterized by several wet and spectroanalytical methods. Their formation was shown to be general for any polyamine when reacted with the hydrate of an yttrium salt. The identical product was obtained independently through the tetrahydronitrate salt of cyclam. The difficulty in the successful preparation of a complex has been traced to the presence of water. In general yttrium complexes more strongly with oxygen than nitrogen. Thus, yttrium complexes with nitrogen containing ligands can be prepared only under completely anhydrous conditions. Obtaining and storing anhydrous yttrium salts were found to be an extremely difficult and complex problem. Commercial preparations are not reliable and producing them in the laboratory just prior to use is beyond the capabilities of our facilities.
