Abstract

A plating bath for the electroless plating of copper and tin (bronze) was developed and by the varying of several parameters such as temperature, concentration copper, tin, dirnethylamine borane (DMAB), and EDTA, the utility of the bath was examined. It was found that DMAB provided a very high plating rate as compared to standard industrial baths consisting of formaldehyde as a reducing agent. Results indicate that the concentration of tin in the plate can be adjusted from 1.5% to 20% with the variation of copper concentration in the bath alone. Adjustment of other factors provided enhancement of plating rates along with small variations in the percentage of tin in the plate. Further, a novel methodology for the analysis of copper and tin simultanously by atomic absorption spectrophotometry was developed using a air-acetylene-oxygen flame. This provided an analysis of tin which was virtually unaffected by any concentration of copper or iron in a solution to be analysed.
