Abstract
Time is a major theme in Shakespeare's tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, and time is the basis for the characterization, atmosphere, and plot in the tragedy. Each character's words depict his place in time-whether he is very young or very old. An atmosphere of time movement prevails continually in Romeo and Juliet with the imagery of lightness and darkness and of the heavens including the sun, moon and stars. All action in the plot depends on time--some situations occur too early, others occur too late. The story is compressed into a very few days so that time becomes most important. Shakespeare is concerned with time throughout the tragedy.
