Abstract

The single crystal electronic spectra of tetragonal NiL2Cl2 , where L = pyridine and quinoline, complexes have been measured with polarized light at liquid N2 temperature. The bands in the spectra of dipyridine complex were polarized and thus assigned on the basis of D4h vibronic intensity mechanism. The bands in the spectra of diquinoline complex, however, did not show any distinctive polarization characteristics and were assigned assuming same order of energy levels as in the dipyridine complex. Our assignments of the spectra of both systems differ from those published earlier by others. The assigned absorption maxima in the dipyridine system were fitted with the predicted energy equations extracting electron repulsion, spin-orbit, and ligand field symmetry parameters. It was found that either the ligand field symmetry parameters or the translated molecular orbital bonding parameters are not transferable from one system to another in the case of tetragonal Ni(II) complexes.
