Abstract

The potentiometric response of liquid-membrane ion-selective electrodes is investigated for a series of inorganic anions. Instantaneous and steady-state measurements are contrasted, and the greater reliability of instantaneous measurements is discussed. The effects of variation of exchanger site, exchanger site concentration, and solvent in the liquidmembrane phase on electrode selectivity are investigated. For electrodes containing substituted and unsubstituted tris(1, 10-phenanthroline) iron(II) complexes and tetraheptylammonium ion as ion-exchange sites, the following sequence of selectivity is established for monovalent anions: PF6- > C104- > SCN-, BF4 , I- > NO3 > Br- > Cl-. The observed selectivity sequence is determined primarily by the charge-to-size ratios and free energies of hydration of the anions.
