Abstract

The in vitro characteristics of a vaccine and wild type strain of channel catfish virus (CCV) were compared in order to establish a genetic marker for attenuation. The vaccine strain was found to produce smaller, turbid plaques with a mean diameter of 0.384 mm at 29°C. The virulent strain produced clear plaques with a mean diameter of 1.16 mm under identical conditions. Both strains produced significantly smaller plaques at 25°C. Replication of the vaccine strain was found to be almost identical at both 25 and 29°C, while the virulent strain produced five times as much virus at the elevated temperature. The amount of progeny virus released into the fluid medium was found to be greater than that which remained cell associated for both strains. No significant difference in adsorbing ability was found between the two strains.
