Abstract
A systematic investigation was conducted on the species of Nephrolepis in Florida. More than 100 morphological characters were evaluated on several hundred specimens collected throughout the state. Statistical analysis and comparative morphology indicate four species to occur in Florida, N. biserrata (Sw.) Schott, N. cordifolia (L.) Presl, N. exaltata (L.) Schott, and N. multiflora (Roxb.) Jarrett ex Morton. A new hybrid, N. x averyi Nauman, was discovered. Ecology, distributions, spore morphology, hybridization and classification of the genus are discussed. A key to the Florida species with descriptions, synonymy and distributions is provided.
