Abstract
The bones, muscles, and ligaments used during feeding in Labrisomus nuchipinnis are described and illustrated. The alimentary tract is also described. The feeding mechanism is a generalized perciform type wi h the protractor hyoideus and sternohyoideus muscles opening the mouth and the adductor mandibulae muscle closing the mouth. The ascending process of the premaxillary slides under the nasal bone and is protracted by rotation of the maxillary. The digestive system is Z-shaped with an enlarged foregut representing 50% of the total gut length. There are no valves or caecae. The gut contents of 83 specimens were analyzed and consists of benthic forms, predominately crustaceans and molluscs. Food items are sucked into the mouth whole by the expansion of the buccal-pharyngeal cavity.
