Abstract
Studies were conducted to determine whether Belonesox belizanus, an exotic poeciliid, had any impact on the native ichthyofauna of southern Florida and to determine the role of refugia in this predator-prey interaction. Field collections indicated, and pool and aquaria studies verified, an adverse impact of B. belizanus on native poeciliids and cyprinodontids. The degree of impact is indirectly proportional to the amount of refuge offered the prey in the form of submerged aquatic vegetation.
