Abstract
This study endeavors to achieve two objectives. It attempts to apply the tagmemic concept as outlined by Pike and Longacre to French clauses as well as to demonstrate the potentially harmonious relationship between tagmemic and transformational techniques. In Chapter Three, French clauses are divided into three primary classes on the basis of their internal nuclear tagmemes and transform potential. In Chapter Four, these three primary clause types, Transitive, Intransitive, and Equative, are then shown to underlie and give rise to secondary Passive, Impersonal, Focus and Stative clauses. Tertiary Interrogative and Imperative clause types are then derived from both primary and secondary clause types.
