Abstract

The synthesis, and some aspects of the resulting characterization, are described for a series of eight anion-radical salts, each with tetracyano-p-quinodimethan (TCNQ) as the acceptor and a substituted pyridinium ion as the donor. Four closely related pyridinium ions were used, and the simple (1 : 1) and complex (1 : 2) anion-radical salt of each were successfully prepared. Details of the special measures necessary for the modification of a given method of preparation and / or purification are discussed. A mechanism is proposed for the conversion of simple salts to salts of complex composition based upon disproportionation of the TCNQ anion-radical. Three of the salts yielded single crystals large enough for studies of crystal morphology, and electrical conductivity. Conductivities of all eight salts, determined on compactions, were measured as a function of temperature between 300 and 100K. Apparently, within this series of compounds, the entire range of conduction behavior-insulators, semiconductors, and a possible semimetal-has been achieved.
