Abstract

Lateral line scales of five spec1es of squirrelfishes were examined with light and scanning electron microscopy, revealing complex structural relationships which may affect the operation and function of the trunk lateral line system. The location of pores relative to sensory neuromasts and the variable shape of the canal, not evident from the scale surface, may influence sensory response. Individual, intraspecific and interspecific variation in scale morphology was considerable, thus general structural patterns were difficult to establish. It is suggested that lateral line scale morphology may be a variable to consider in fish bio-acoustic studies.
