Abstract

The sufferings of man pervade the eight essays which together comprise Antoine de Saint-Exupery's Terre des hommes. But these sufferings are or can be of a constructive nature and it is this point that Saint-Exupery seeks to relate to all men. Life presents one with obstacles and it is in dealing with these obstacles that one becomes strengthened. Saint-Exupery wished to bring each one to his highest potential and to achieve this, he prescribed an action-filled life with discipline, sacrifice and suffering as major components. He abhors the stagnant, routine-filled life that so many people lead. Instead he urges man to live life with all of its joys and sufferings to the fullest extent.
