Abstract
This study seeks to coordinate and classify facts pertaining to negation in German, primarily for the purpose of classroom teaching. The position and meaning of negative elements, particularly the word nicht 'not', present many l earning problems to persons studying German and it is to this problem that the present study is directed. The first three chapters deal with the process of negation in German which employs the negator nicht . This includes the use of the noun modifier kein as well as the negative prefix un- and other less frequent prefixes like il-, im-, in-, a-, ent-, ver-. The study sometimes employs tree diagrams in order to graphically demonstrate certain structures.
