Abstract

This thesis examines the history of Portuguese immigration to the United States. The ditferences in time and place of immigration are delineated; the adaptation of the Portuguese in New England and California is described. The methods of assimilation of the Portuguese immigrants are explained in light of the discrimination which they faced, especially in the Northeast. Some conclusions are drawn about the direction of further Portuguese immigration and assimilation under the pressure of an intense new wave of arrivals since 1965.
