Abstract
The central theme of this thesis is an analysis of the causes which led to the endorsement of the European Defense Community by Konrad Adenauer, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany and the repudiatiorr of the organization by General Charles de Gaulle. Use has been made of several speeches of Charles de Gaulle heretofore unpublished in English.
