Abstract
Yellowhead jawfish from thirteen different geographic locations throughout the Caribbean area, including Florida and the Bahamas, were examined in order to ascertain the amount of variation which exists between specimens from different locations. The characters examined included morphometric proportions, fin-ray counts, gill raker counts, nuclear eye lens proteins using polyacrylamide gel electrophorsis, and head pigmentation. Opistognathus aurifrons is shown to vary in several characters over its range, and environmental parameters are suggested as an explanation for geographic variation observed both within and between populations the geographic variations are not given subspecific ranking within O. aurifrons.
