Abstract

The polarized single crystal spectra have been measured for quadrate nickel(II) complexes of the general formula [NiX4Y2] where X = pyridine and Y = Cl-, Br-, H2O. The unpolarized crystal spectrum is also reported where X = imidazole and Y = H2O. The tetragonally split components of the first and second cubic bands have been definitely assigned using polarization selection rules. Further transitions have been assigned from calculations of the energy levels including complete configurational interaction and spin-orbit coupling. The ligand field parameters and electron correlation parameters have been evaluated for each complex.
