Abstract
The term “ritual” has been used to exoticize cultures that are engaging in practices that the western world deems too foreign. When in reality, and definitionally, the west is constantly performing rituals as well. This manuscript explores the rituals found in the Indigenous Futurist trilogy, Between Earth and Sky, by Rebecca Roanhorse. There are rituals found throughout the series that result in fantastical outcomes akin to what fantasy readers have come to know as magic. The rituals that Roanhorse implements are inspired by actual practices and this manuscript looks for their real-world counterparts.
