Abstract

This study utilizes the World Health Organization’s growth stunting identification standards to investigate the possibility of growth stunting in a collection of subadult remains from Telekfalva, Transylvania, Romania. Length-for-age is estimated using femur length and dental development stage (Shaefer et al., 2009) and compared to the Maresh Standard Growth Data (Maresh, 1943, 1955, 1970). Growth stunting is identified in individuals who fall less than -two standard deviations from the expected femur length-for-age. Additionally, this research investigates a pattern of abnormal, multilayered cortical bone deposition seen primarily in individuals with growth stunting. The correlation between abnormal cortical bone deposition and growth stunting has the potential for macroscopic identification of growth disruption in skeletal remains.
